Why Knee Sleeves Matter: Protection and Performance in CrossFit

Your knees absorb an enormous amount of force in CrossFit. Between squats, Olympic lifts, box jumps, lunges, wall balls, and running, the knee joint is under constant load. Unlike muscles, which recover and adapt relatively quickly, joints and connective tissue take longer to respond to training stress — and they are far less forgiving when something goes wrong.

Knee sleeves are one of the simplest, most effective ways to support your knees through the demands of CrossFit training. They are not a brace, they are not a crutch, and they are not just for injured athletes. Here is what they do and why they matter.

How Knee Sleeves Work

Knee sleeves provide three primary benefits:

1. Compression

The neoprene material applies consistent pressure around the knee joint, which increases blood flow to the area. Better blood flow means faster warm-up, improved proprioception (your brain’s awareness of joint position), and reduced swelling after training.

2. Warmth

Neoprene is an excellent insulator. By trapping body heat around the knee, sleeves keep the synovial fluid (the joint’s natural lubricant) warm and viscous. Cold, stiff joints are more susceptible to injury — particularly during early morning sessions or in air-conditioned gyms.

3. Stability

While knee sleeves do not restrict movement like a rigid brace, they do provide a level of passive stability that can improve your confidence under load. Many athletes report that their squat feels more “locked in” with sleeves on — this is partly physical and partly psychological, and both matter.

7mm vs 5mm: Which Thickness?

The two most common thicknesses for CrossFit knee sleeves are 5mm and 7mm. Here is the trade-off:

  • 5mm: More flexible, less restrictive, better for mixed-modal workouts where you are transitioning between movements quickly. Preferred by athletes who find 7mm too warm or bulky.
  • 7mm: More support, more compression, more warmth. Preferred for heavy lifting days and athletes who want maximum joint protection.

Our 7mm CrossFit Knee Sleeves use 7mm neoprene — the thickness we recommend for most CrossFit athletes. The additional support is noticeable during heavy squats and Olympic lifts without significantly restricting movement during metabolic conditioning work.

When to Wear Knee Sleeves

There is no hard rule, but here are general guidelines:

Always wear them for:

  • Heavy squat sessions (back squat, front squat, overhead squat)
  • Olympic lifting (cleans and snatches involve deep knee flexion under load)
  • High-volume wall balls and thrusters
  • Any session where you have existing knee discomfort

Optional for:

  • Running-heavy workouts (some athletes find them too warm)
  • Upper-body focused sessions
  • Warm-ups (though many athletes prefer to warm up in sleeves)

Consider removing for:

  • Rope climbs (they can slip and bunch behind the knee)
  • Extremely long workouts in hot conditions where heat management matters

Sizing Your Knee Sleeves

Knee sleeves should be snug but not painful. To find your size:

  1. Measure the circumference of your knee at the centre of the kneecap while standing
  2. Refer to the sizing chart — if you are between sizes, go tighter for more support or looser for more comfort
  3. They should be difficult to pull on (use a plastic bag over your foot to help slide them up) but comfortable once in position

A properly fitted knee sleeve should feel like firm compression, not a tourniquet. If your leg goes numb or you cannot achieve full flexion, they are too tight.

Pairing Knee Sleeves with a Weightlifting Belt

For heavy lifting days, many athletes combine knee sleeves with a Weightlifting Belt. This combination provides support to both the knee joint and the lumbar spine during movements like heavy back squats, cleans, and deadlifts. If you are working above 80% of your one-rep max on squat-pattern movements, this combination is worth considering.

Care and Maintenance

Neoprene knee sleeves will develop an odour if not cared for. Trust us on this one.

  • After every session: Turn them inside out and let them air dry completely. Do not leave them balled up in your gym bag.
  • Weekly wash: Hand wash in cold water with mild soap or sports detergent. Squeeze out excess water — do not wring them aggressively.
  • Never machine dry: Heat degrades neoprene. Air dry only, out of direct sunlight.
  • Vinegar soak: If odour builds up, soak them in a solution of water and white vinegar for 30 minutes before washing.

When to Replace Them

Well-maintained knee sleeves last 12-18 months of regular training. Replace them when:

  • The neoprene has stretched and no longer provides noticeable compression
  • The stitching is fraying or separating
  • They slide down during workouts despite being the correct size
  • You can pull them on easily — this means they have lost their compression

Your knees do an incredible amount of work in CrossFit. A quality pair of knee sleeves is one of the best investments you can make in your training longevity.
